Actor Lucy Liu has revealed why she didn’t think twice about standing up to co-star Bill Murray when he insulted her on the set of Charlie’s Angels, even though he was much more famous at the time. The 2000 blockbuster also featured Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore and, despite having previously landed a breakout role on the TV show Ally McBeal, Liu was the least established of the film’s leads. At one point during filming, a scene was reworked over the weekend while Murray was away. When he came back and found the scene had been changed, he started to “hurl insults” at Liu, prompting her to defend herself, she revealed on a podcast in 2021. Asked by The Guardian why she spoke up even though many actors would have kept quiet on the set of their first big-budget film, she replied, “I really didn’t think about it. I would have done that in any situation. I think when I sense something is not right, I am going to protect myself.” Murray’s reputation as the beloved star of classics like Caddyshack, Groundhog Day and Ghostbusters has been complicated in recent years by allegations of on-set disputes. Despite their earlier clash, Liu later told Deadline she and Murray had reconciled.
