Every Small Kitchen Should Utilize Magnetic Storage

VERTICAL STORAGE

Buying this small rack opened up a whole other option of kitchen storage for me.

Magnetic storage is the unsung hero of a small kitchen. The fridge is a really great (and underutilized) place to keep things you use every day, like spices, oils, oven mitts, and dish towels. And I, for one, have found inspiration and solace in a simple, tiered fridge organizer from Amazon.

To be honest, it was an impulse purchase. I was fed up with always moving things around in my kitchen to make extra room where I could. I have always harped on the importance of vertical and alternative storage and I wasn’t heeding my own advice. Buying this small rack opened up a whole other option of kitchen storage for me.

What this rack allows me to do is move my salt cellar, pepper grinder, and olive oil bottle up off of my counter (or perched precariously on top of my oven’s display) and within arms reach of my cooking surface. It may seem like a small thing, but it’s an improvement that makes cooking, and then cleaning up after said cooking, so much simpler.

The rack itself is sturdy metal and the magnet feels strong and substantial. It’s wide (and strong) enough to hold an entire quart of vegetable oil, though I only use mine for holding an oil dispenser rather than a full bottle. There are larger versions, too, like this one from Yamazaki home, that has space for multiple levels of organization and the ability to hang towels, oven mitts, and miscellaneous kitchen tools.

Before I had the spice rack, I had magnetic spice tins that I filled with all of the spices I used regularly and they hung right next to my stove for easy access. And at my previous apartment, we had enough wall space for a magnetic knife strip that kept a knife block from crowding our small amount of counter space. Both options utilized vertical space in an unobtrusive way that helped cut down on things spread out across my kitchen counters.

If you want to jazz up your magnetic storage a bit, you could get one with a chic wood accent and an anti-slip mat, or if you don’t have room on your fridge, you could get one made especially to fit the top of your stove.
