Man Released After 43 Years in Solitary

FREEDOM

Part of the “Angola 3” convictions in Louisiana.

Albert Woodfox, an “Angola 3” member who was held in solitary confinement for more than 43 years, longer than any other prisoner in U.S. history, will be released Friday. Woodfox agreed to a plea deal after facing trial for a third time in the 1972 murder of a prison guard at the Louisiana State Penitentiary. Woodfox pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated burglary, and received a 42-year sentence for the crimes. Woodfox has already served 45 years and has maintained his innocence in the murder of a prison guard. The Angola 3 were prisoners whose long plight in solitary at the facility attracted international attention.
