New York federal prosecutor Danielle R. Sassoon, resigned after being ordered to drop corruption charges against New York City mayor Eric Adams, according to a senior official, NBC reported. Sassoon, the acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, was ordered by the acting U.S. deputy attorney general, Emil Bove, to drop the case against Adams because it hindered his ability to combat “illegal immigration and violent crime.” Adams was chanced in an indictment for receiving campaign contributions from foreign nationals as well as committing wire fraud and bribery, according to court filings unsealed in September. The New York City mayor was accused of taking $100,000 worth of free plane tickets and luxury hotel accommodations from Turkish nationals. Sassoon, who is known for prosecuting crypto fraudster Sam Bankman Fried, announced her resignation in a brief statement she made to colleagues. Her office, which is often referred to as the “Sovereign District of New York,” remains empty for now, with no clear successor in sight.
