Virginia’s two U.S. senators, Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, said they placed a phone call to Gov. Ralph Northam and demanded his resignation after his bizarre press conference on Saturday. Northam is under fire for a racist photo published on his 1984 yearbook page. On Friday, the Democrat first said he was in the photo showing a man in blackface and another one in KKK robes. Then on Saturday he said he was sure he wasn’t in the photo (because he doesn’t remember it)—but said he had darkened his face for a Michael Jackson dance contest the same year. “After we watched his press conference today, we called Governor Northam to tell him that we no longer believe he can effectively serve as Governor of Virginia and that he must resign,” Kaine, Warner, and Rep. Bobby Scottt of Virginia said in a statement. “Governor Northam has served the people of the Commonwealth faithfully for many years, but the events of the past 24 hours have inflicted immense pain and irrevocably broken the trust Virginians must have in their leaders. He should step down and allow the Commonwealth to begin healing.”
