Arizona Sen. John McCain’s GOP primary opponent from the 2016 election said the longtime senator should resign from Congress amid his brain cancer diagnosis. “I hope Sen. McCain is going to look long and hard at this, that his family and his advisers are going to look at this, and they’re going to advise him to step away as quickly as possible, so that the business of the country and the business of Arizona being represented at the federal level can move forward,” Kelli Ward told an Indiana radio station. Ward challenged McCain unsuccessfully in 2016, and is gearing up to challenge Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake next year. In a message on her website titled, “My Prayers to John McCain,” Ward said McCain “owes it to the people of Arizona to step aside.” McCain revealed last week that doctors discovered a brain tumor known as glioblastoma when they were performing emergency surgery to remove a blood clot above his eye.
