Deep cuts to Medicaid proposed in the American Health Care Act, the GOP’s repeal of Obamacare, will affect funding for special education. The AHCA, also referred to as Trumpcare, imposes $880 billion in Medicaid cuts over the next 10 years and “would convert Medicaid from an entitlement designed to cover any costs incurred to a more limited program,” The New York Times reports. Republicans say the cuts are necessary due to skyrocketing health-care costs. “School-based Medicaid programs serve as a lifeline to children who can’t access critical health care and health services outside of their school,” the Save Medicaid in Schools Coalition wrote in a letter to lawmakers. House Republicans are set to vote on the legislation Thursday after saying they have secured enough votes. Its fate in the Senate remains unclear.
