Melania Trump offered a rare policy statement Sunday in which she appeared to break with the Trump administration on the controversial zero-tolerance immigration policy sparking widespread outrage. In a statement issued to CNN through her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, the first lady said she “hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform.” Trump and several White House officials have spoken publicly in recent days about how they dislike using a policy that involves the separation of migrant families, a measure that Trump has repeatedly claimed is a law forced on the country by Democrats. But they have insisted the laws must be obeyed and the family separations must continue. The first lady took her comments a bit further, however, saying that while “she believes we need to be a country that follows all laws,” we should also be “a country that governs with heart.”
