After Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour declared that it’s important for the magazine to “take a stand,” first lady Melania Trump’s office reportedly said the fashion industry was “biased” and Wintour herself was “insecure.” According to USA Today, Wintour praised former first lady Michelle Obama in a recent interview—stating that the Obama administration was “just such a joy for all of us that work in fashion.” The magazine has featured Obama on the cover three times and profiled Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) in more recent issues. In contrast, Melania Trump has yet to be on a Vogue cover since becoming first lady. “We profile women in the magazine that we believe in the stand that they’re taking on issues we support them in the fact that we feel that they are leaders,” Wintour said, when asked about the profiles of Democratic women.
In response, spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said the first lady has more important issues to attend to than “some superficial” magazine cover. “To be on the cover of Vogue doesn’t define Mrs. Trump, she’s been there, done that long before she was first lady,” Grisham told the newspaper. “This just further demonstrates how biased the fashion magazine industry is, and shows how insecure and small-minded Anna Wintour really is. Unfortunately, Mrs. Trump is used to this kind of divisive behavior.” Wintour’s office reportedly did not respond to USA Today’s request for comment.
