Brace yourselves, “Remember the ’90s?” posts are coming. The Internet's longing for ’90s nostalgia came to fruition this week with the “1990s First World Problems” image macro meme. It all began on July 3, when Redditor SimonOwens submitted a photograph of actor James Van Der Beek from the popular ’90s TV show Dawson’s Creek (shown left) with a familiar reference to the once-popular-but-now-irrelevant TV Guide magazine. Soon, others chimed in with hundreds of blast-from-the-past punchlines involving 56K dial-up Internet, VHS tapes, and Tamagotchi digital pets among other things. Although we’ve seen quite a few jokes that spun off from last year’s mega-hit First World Problems, this one seems to have meshed particularly well with Reddit's backbone audience of 24-to-34-year-old guys who can’t seem to go a day without reminiscing about Super Mario Bros or Nokia cellphones anyway. Not sure if you're in the target demographic? You can take a test for that. Meme of the Week is brought to you by Cheezburger. It’s hard to believe there was a time when you had to remain stationary to make phone calls. At least it was better than that awkward stage when you were the only one with a cellphone in your friend group. Like a high schooler with a driver’s license, everyone was always after your precious “minutes.” Image via Know Your Meme Description: Speaking of “minutes,” I was barely able to search any keywords before my allotted AOL hour expired this month! Now I have to wait weeks to hear that soothing dial-up sound… or I guess I could stop by my local Blockbuster and pick up another Free Trial Disc. Image via Know Your Meme Description: Oh that's right—Blockbuster is practically extinct now. Is it because no one ever took the time to “be kind?” Image via Know Your Meme Description: Ugh, and now the power switch sticks a little when I turn it on... and I’m all out of AA batteries. Image via Know Your Meme There’s a ton of much nostalgia for videogames, especially—and these didn’t even have save files. “I forgot to write down the password, so now I have to start from the beginning!” Image via Know Your Meme >cards.exe >TRY AGAIN You know what? I'm glad we're done with 1990s videogames. That stuff made no sense. Image via Know Your Meme
