Chancellors, they’re just like us! Europe was atwitter this week after photos surfaced of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her husband, Joachim Sauer, on an Easter vacation in southern Italy—sporting bathing suits. The images shed light on Merkel’s tightly protected and highly secretive personal life, a product of the “high-minded German mainstream media” who view her as more of a “political being than a personal being.” Even more shocking than the bathing suits, was the appearance of Merkel’s husband, Sauer, a chemist who rarely appears in public. Hopefully—for Merkel’s sake—one sneak peek into her life was enough for the public. (Doubt it).
