Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rebuked Google’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico on Google Maps in a Wednesday press conference.

After President Donald Trump issued an executive order changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in all government references, Sheinbaum called into question the legality of the move and said she intends to write a letter to Google challenging the decision.

“By the way, we are also going to ask for ‘América Mexicana’ to appear on the map. When you write ‘América Mexicana, it may appear on the map,” added Sheinbaum.

In a Monday X post, Google confirmed that Google Maps users in the U.S. will now see Gulf of America while users outside of the U.S. will see both names.

“We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources,” wrote Google.

Upon declaring a state of emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border, Trump also warned that he intends to slap a 25 percent tariff on all goods from Canada and Mexico unless the countries close their borders by Feb. 1.

During his Senate confirmation hearing, billionaire Howard Lutnick, who is Trump’s nominee to run the commerce department, said he has advised the president to restore “reciprocity” among America’s trading partners.

“So this is a separate tariff to create action from Mexico and action from Canada,” said Lutnick, reported The Guardian. “And as far as I know, they are acting swiftly, and if they execute it, there will be no tariff.”

Sheinbaum addressed the looming deadline in her Wednesday press conference, saying, “We don’t think [the tariffs] will happen.” She added, “And if they do, we have our plan.”
