Miami Dolphins wide receivers Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson took a knee during the national anthem before their game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, becoming the first players to take part in the protest against police brutality in the regular 2018 season. Defensive end Robert Quinn also raised a fist as the anthem played. The protest, which gained momentum when former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick first started it in 2016, has gained new relevance in light of Kaepernick’s legal bid against the NFL. Kaepernick, who has said he first kneeled during the anthem to call attention to racial inequality, filed a grievance against the NFL alleging that league owners conspired to keep him from getting signed due to his role in the protest. Former 49ers safety Eric Reid, also a driving force behind the protests, has filed a similar claim. Stills has said he would consider stopping his protest if both Kaepernick and Reid get signed by an NFL team. Kaepernick hailed their protest on Sunday, writing on Twitter that their “courage will move the world forward.”
