Michael Crichton's Pop Art Collection for Sale

The Lost World

Millions loved writer Michael Crichton’s knowledge of dinosaurs and emergency rooms, but few know that the late author also left behind Pop Art works he collected and researched dutifully. From Jasper Johns to Roy Lichtenstein, Crichton’s collection, which will be sold at Christie’s in New York on May 11 and 12, highlights some of the period’s most well-known pieces, such as Johns’ Flag. As close friends, Crichton came to be regarded as a leading authority on Johns in the art world. Christie’s anticipates Flag, which has a pre-sale estimate of $10 million to $15 million, will set a new world record for Johns. Eighty percent of Crichton’s accumulated works will be auctioned in the May sale, but about 70 of those will be displayed at Christie’s in Rockefeller Center from April 9 through April 13 for all to see the breadth of his knowledge.
