Michelle Pfeiffer was supposed to present the Academy Award for Best Picture at the Oscars ceremony on Sunday night alongside her Scarface co-star Al Pacino, according to a report, but she was unable to attend the event. Their onstage reunion hadn’t been formally announced but was widely expected, according to Deadline, with sources telling the outlet that Pfeiffer couldn’t make it due to “personal family reasons.” Pacino was left to announce the night’s most prestigious award on his own. The 83-year-old’s bizarre presentation of the honor quickly went viral, with Pacino inexplicably breaking with the convention of reading out the list of all the nominees before revealing the winner. Instead, Pacino just opened the gold envelope and said (something that sounded like): “And my eyes see Oppenheimer.” The announcement initially got a muted response from an apparently bewildered audience who may have thought he was just saying that Christopher Nolan’s biopic had been nominated. The applause and cheering became more effusive when music started playing, confirming that he had, in fact, just announced the winner.
