Mick Mulvaney in 2015: Trump’s Border Wall Is ‘Almost Childish’

Incoming Acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney once said President Trump’s border wall was an “absurd and almost childish” way to address immigration issues in the U.S., CNN reports. “The fence doesn’t solve the problem… Would it help? Sure. But to just say build the darn fence and have that be the end of an immigration discussion is absurd and almost childish for someone running for president to take that simplistic of [a] view,” he said in a 2015 interview with a South Carolina radio station. He also strongly asserted that building a wall along the southern border would not stop the influx of migrants from entering the country, and said such a claim was a ploy to appeal to voters’ emotions. “The bottom line is the fence doesn't stop anybody who really wants to get across… You go under, you go around, you go through it,” Mulvaney said. “It’s easy to tell people what they want to hear, ‘build the darn fence, vote for me.’” The White House and a spokesperson for Mulvaney did not return CNN’s request for comment. The Daily Beast previously reported that Mulvaney called Trump “a terrible human being” in a 2016 congressional debate.
