Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke has withdrawn his name from consideration to work as assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security. Clarke, who said he’d resign as sheriff to work in President Trump’s administration, reportedly changed his mind due to numerous delays in the hiring process. He was initially expected to take the post by the end of June. Clarke, an outspoken supporter of Trump and vocal critic of Black Lives Matter, has recently come under fire for conditions at a Milwaukee jail that critics say led to an inmate’s death. Clarke was also accused of plagiarizing his master’s thesis last month, though he has denied the allegation. Craig Peterson, an adviser to Clarke, told The Washington Post on Saturday that the sheriff is still “100 percent committed to the success of President Trump” but wants to use his skills “in a more aggressive role.”
