Minnesota has put a ballot initiative for 2012 that would limit marriage as between one man and one woman, making the politically moderate state front and center on the national debate on gay marriage. If the amendment passes, it will hurt the argument that the national tide has turned toward same-sex marriage—and many supporters have decamped to Minnesota to make sure the amendment is defeated. But despite New York’s recent gay-marriage victory, opponents of same-sex marriage have won every single ballot measure—31 straight victories.
