More animal deaths to ponder: Hundreds, and possibly thousands, of birds in Italy fell dead from the sky on Wednesday, the Italian GeaPress news agency reports. Countless turtle doves were found in the town of Faenza with a mysterious blue stain on their beaks. The Italian news agency suggests the stains could be the result of poisoning or possibly hypoxia; test results are expected in about a week. But the birds join a number of strange animal mysteries popping up in the new year: Thousands of birds were found dead in Arkansas, most likely due to fireworks, and thousands more were reported dead in Louisiana, Kentucky, and Sweden. Two million dead fish washed ashore in Brazil, New Zealand, and Arkansas, along with 40,000 crabs in England.
