Aid groups have warned of a humanitarian crisis unfolding in South Asia after severe flooding displaced millions and left over 1,000 people dead. While flooding in Houston has dominated headlines in recent days, the United Nations has warned of a similar catastrophe in Nepal, Bangladesh, and India, where at least 41 million people have been affected after months of flooding. “This is the severest flooding in a number of years,” Francis Markus, a spokesman for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, told The New York Times from Nepal. “We hope people won’t overlook the desperate needs of the people here because of the disasters closer to home.” Corinne Ambler, a Red Cross spokeswoman in Bangladesh, told the Times an aerial tour of the flooding revealed only “tiny little clumps of houses stuck in the middle of water.” Mumbai, India’s’ financial capital, has also been brought to a standstill, with schools shut down, hospitals full of water, and authorities warning residents to stay off submerged roads.
