Mount Nyiragongo Erupts in Congo, Sending Thousands Across Rwanda Border

Mount Nyiragongo erupted near the eastern city of Goma, sending thousands of Congolese across the border with Rwanda.

Burning lava from the spectacular eruption of Congo’s Mt. Nyiragongo breached the city limits of Goma, causing a mass evacuation reminiscent of the eruption of 2002 that left 120,000 people homeless and killed hundreds. By early Sunday, lava flows towards Goma had slowed, but a series of tremors rattled the city. Thousands have fled across the border with Rwanda.
