The D.C. grand jury used by Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the 2016 election has been granted a six-month extension, CNN reports. The 23-person group reportedly was seated for an 18-month term which commenced in July 2017 and was set to expire in “coming days.” Chief Judge Beryl Howell of the D.C. District Court, who oversees Mueller’s grand jury, reportedly granted the extension. According to federal rules, the court can extend a grand jury’s term for an additional six months if the extension is “in the public interest.” Mueller is currently investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election, and has indicted various individuals connected to President Trump on perjury and other charges.
