Netflix almost never reveals ratings numbers for its original TV and film offerings. So it was notable on Friday when the streaming service boasted on Twitter that the recently released dystopian thriller Bird Box, starring Sandra Bullock, was watched by over 45 million accounts in its first week, making it the most successful Netflix film ever. The Susanne Bier-directed movie, based on a 2014 novel of the same name, currently sits at a middling 66 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with several critics describing it as a less effective version of John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place. That indie-film hit made an impressive $50 million in its opening weekend and has taken in an astonishing $340 million at the worldwide box office since it was released in April. But if every Netflix account that watched Bird Box represented just one $10 movie ticket, that film would have already grossed $450 million in its first week.
