‘New Republic’ Sold to Liberal Publisher

CHANGING HANDS

Changes ownership for second time in as many years.

Beleagured liberal commentary magazine The New Republic has been sold to a new publisher for an undisclosed amount. According to CNN media reporter Brian Stelter, current publisher Chris Hughes sold the 1914-founded magazine to "Win McCormack, a Portland & NY-based publisher active in liberal politics," who is also editor-in-chief of Tin House, a quarterly literary publication. As part of the new ownership, Hamilton Fish, the publisher of Washington Spectator, will serve as publisher and editorial director. The New Republic's previous ownership change, back in 2014, resulted in mass resignation of writers and editors, as well as a complete overhaul of the outlet's digital presence.
