Weren’t Twinkies supposed to last forever anyway? The cream-filled sponge cakes set to make their triumphant return to supermarket shelves next week will be different from their predecessor in one important way: their shelf life will be three weeks longer. Hostess, the company that makes the treat, won’t say what changes were made to extend the shelf life from 26 to 45 days, but a spokeswoman said the decision was made before the company went bankrupt. About 10 percent of the stores that sell Twinkies will get theirs frozen from the manufacturers so the cakes last even longer.
