In an op-ed Tuesday, the New York Post’s editorial board called the stunning layoffs at the New York Daily News a “grim day” for New York City. “Yes, the News has been The Post’s competitor for decades, and the rivalry’s often turned bitter,” the Post wrote. “But rivalry has its joys as well: Even getting beaten to a story is an inspiration to do better next time.” The board said they’d “crossed our fingers” upon hearing rumors that the drastic layoffs might be coming. “We sincerely hope the remaining staff can find a way to turn things around,” the editorial says. “We want to beat the News, but not like this.” On Monday, publishing company Tronc announced that it was slashing the Daily News’ editorial staff by 50 percent and focusing on breaking news.
