The youngest victim of the brutal mosque attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand—2-year-old Averroes Syah—has been released from the hospital, The New Zealand Herald reports Wednesday. The toddler and his father, Zulfirman Syah, were reportedly attending services at the Linwood mosque when the gunman attacked on March 15. “My husband shielded our son during the attack at Linwood Islamic Centre, which caused him to receive most of the bullets and much more complex injuries than our son,” Syah’s wife, Alta Sacra, wrote on Facebook. Averroes reportedly suffered a gunshot wound on his leg and backside; his father was hit multiple times and is now in stable condition after extensive surgery. Zulfirman is expected to be released soon. “We are grateful for the endless stream of support we have received,” Sacra added. “The medical care has been top-notch and we will be forever grateful to each person who has had any hand in easing the difficulties of this situation.”
