Nicki Minaj’s ‘Only’ Lyrics Video Is Like a Loose Adaptation of ‘Mein Kampf’ ft. Drake

First Nicki Minaj came for all the skinny bitches in the club, and I did not speak out because I was not a skinny bitch in the club. Now it appears that Nicki Minaj is coming for us all in an abhorrent Nazi themed video—and a lot of people are speaking out, because WTF Nicki.

On Saturday, Minaj released the lyric video for her new single “Only,” directed by Jeff Osborne. In case you were wondering, a lyric video is like a picture book; in this case, it’s specifically like a loose adaptation of Mein Kampf ft. Drake. The video pulls from a wide spectrum of Nazi iconography, ranging from a subtle totalitarian color scheme to full out Young Money swastikas. In addition to the robotic militant masses, Third Reich-inspired architecture, and telltale armbands, the piece naturally features Minaj herself as charismatic leader, immortalized in the signature long shot of the Nazi propaganda film.

Minaj further mystifies her motives by layering these terrifying, offensive visual cues with her own totally incongruous lyrics. Say what you will about one of the most repulsive men in human history, but at least Adolf Hitler never uttered the linguistic atrocity: “I don’t fuck with them chickens unless they last name is cutlet.” This unique combination of inane rhymes with genocidal undertones ultimately comes off as scary stupid—thought not entirely unexpected, coming from an artist who believes that the only two ingredients in a fruit salad are bananas and whipped cream.

Needless to say, Nicki Minaj has had a lot of great ideas in the past, like neon pink exercise thongs, partial ownership in a Moscato beverage company, and not sleeping with Drake. But trying to generate buzz for her single through appropriating Nazi propaganda imagery is not one of them.
