The National Rifle Association signaled that it’s managed to talk President Trump down from his sudden and surprising embrace of stricter gun laws, with its top lobbyist saying he was assured that president “doesn’t want gun control.” NRA Executive Director Chris Cox tweeted: “I had a great meeting tonight with [Trump] and [Pence]. We all want safe schools, mental health reform and to keep guns away from dangerous people. POTUS & VPOTUS support the Second Amendment, support strong due process and don’t want gun control.” Shortly afterward, Trump tweeted: “Good (Great) meeting in the Oval Office tonight with the NRA!” On Wednesday, Trump stunned lawmakers by seeming to throw his weight behind strict gun controls, including tougher background checks and raising the age where someone can legally buy a gun. “I like taking guns away early,” Trump said on Wednesday. “Take the guns first, go through due process second.”
