New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio reportedly dismissed a homeless woman who approached him at the gym, asking for “more housing for people like her.” “I’m doing my workout,” de Blasio said before walking away from 72-year-old Nathylin Flowers Adesegun. “I can’t do this now.” According to Park Slope Patch, Adesegun was one of “dozens” of VOCAL-NY advocates who showed up to the YMCA to demand that de Blasio “make 30,000 affordable housing units available to homeless New Yorkers.” The mayor’s Mandatory Inclusionary Housing program mandates that larger construction projects have to include a certain percentage of affordable housing, but some buildings require exorbitant income requirements that are not feasible for the estimated 62,000 homeless people in the city. “He made it clear that his morning workout was more important to him,” Adesegun told the website. “Am I just supposed to stay homeless?”
