A driver in lower Manhattan on Tuesday drove a pickup truck down a stretch of the city’s bike path, killing at least eight people and injuring nearly a dozen more. The vehicle struck pedestrians before colliding with a school bus from Stuyvesant High School, The New York Times reported. Initial witness accounts claimed the driver had also fired shots, but police could not confirm that detail. According to the NYPD: “The vehicle struck multiple people on the path. There are several fatalities and numerous people injured. The vehicle continued south striking another vehicle. The suspect exited the vehicle displaying imitation firearms [later confirmed to be paintball and BB guns] & was shot by NYPD.” Police shut down the West Side Highway as a result of the incident. A law enforcement official tells The Daily Beast a witness saw the perpetrator exit the vehicle and shout “Allah Akbar,” or “God is great,” in Arabic.
