Former White House top strategist Stephen Bannon was subpoenaed by special counsel Robert Mueller to testify in front of a grand jury in the course of an investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, The New York Times reported Tuesday. Though Mueller has used subpoenas in the investigation for previous Trump associates, Bannon is the first of the president’s inner circle to have been pulled in. The Times reports that Mueller may be inclined to allow Bannon to avoid the grand-jury appearance in favor of being privately questioned by investigators. Bannon also testified before the House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday.
