‘Coco’ Fans Are Not Pleased About News of a Sequel

A SEQUEL. AGAIN!

The puns about remaining dead write themselves.

Disney and Pixar just announced that Coco is getting a sequel, but people aren’t sure if they are ready to return to the Land of the Dead.

During the Disney annual shareholder meeting webcast this morning, CEO Bob Iger dropped the news that Coco 2 is currently under development and will see the return of the original animated film’s creative team, including director Lee Unkrichn and co-director Adrian Molina. Currently, it’s predicted for a 2029 release.

“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure,” Iger said. “And we can’t wait to share more soon.”

When Coco first premiered in 2017, the film received rave reviews from fans and critics alike, ultimately grossing over $800 million at the box office and garnering two Academy Awards, for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. In fact, Coco was so successful that it broke what some considered a “dry spell” for Pixar, as it had been over five years since the company produced a critically acclaimed animated film that wasn’t just a sequel.

Although some Coco fans expressed excitement at the news, others didn’t seem as thrilled with the idea of a sequel, wondering if their beloved film really needs a part two.

“What could they even do with a Coco sequel? It felt like a perfect standalone movie. Nothing about it felt like it was meant to be a legitimate Pixar franchise. It’s like doing a sequel to Ratatouille or Up,” one person wrote on X before adding: “Just give us A Bug’s Life 2 already!”

Coco is maybe my fav Pixar film, but I’m genuinely more interested in Toy Story 5 than this, just does not need a sequel,” another user declared, clearly not very happy about the announcement either.

And, of course, there’s the question of plot. As one person asked, “It was perfect. Should have left it alone. How is he gonna die again?”
