Italian president Sergio Mattarella appointed Paolo Gentiloni, 62, as interim prime minister in the wake of last week's resignation by Matteo Renzi. Gentiloni currently serves as Foreign Minister and enjoys widespread respect from both left and right politicians in Italy. He takes over the helm just as Italy braces for an impending bank crisis. Gentiloni, a former journalist, is due to begin consultations with political forces right away to form a new government.
