Christopher Thomas’s new book, Paris City of Light , is a sumptuous love letter to a city that has inspired people for centuries. Well known for his urban portraits, Thomas has shot Munich (his birthplace), New York, and Venice. Working with a large-format camera, two lenses, and a tripod, he shoots on Polaroid film, and his photos evoke the timelessness of a place. The Paris of 2014, through his lens, could well be the Paris of 1914. The eerie absence of people lends the portraits of iconic locations a melancholy air. Beautifully composed and often mathematical in the photos’ symmetry, Paris City of Light (Prestel) will open your eyes to a place so many think they know intimately.
