Family-friendly romps continue to dominate at the domestic box office with new animated film Dog Man reigning over theaters this weekend. Directed by Peter Hastings, Dog Man stars Pete Davidson, Isla Fisher and Ricky Gervais and follows the hijinks of a police officer and dog who get fused into one body. The film has so far grossed $36 million at the domestic box office against a $40 million production budget. Coming in second is another new release, sci-fi horror comedy Companion, from director Drew Hancock. Starring Sophie Thatcher and The Boys’ Jack Quaid, the R-rated flick earned $9.5 million domestically along with rave reviews. Meanwhile, Mufasa: The Lion King continues to impress at third place and earned an additional $6.1 million to its domestic gross. Comedy One of Them Days and action flick Flight Risk trailed behind with $6 million and $5.6 million respectively. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Moana 2 also continue to comfortably sit in the box office’s top 10, with $3.2 million and $2.8 million earned respectively. Per the Associated Press, family flicks accounted for $2.9 billion, roughly 33% of all ticket revenue, of last year’s box office.
