In 2009, Miranda July, the American filmmaker and performer, was invited to contribute to the 2009 Venice Biennale art festival. A series of goofy sculptures called "Eleven Heavy Things" was the result, and they are now on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. "It's almost a cartoon version of what you're supposed to make for an art show," July said, over the phone from her home in L.A. Visitors are encouraged to interact with her sculptures, July explained, and that interaction creates a Miranda July performance, of sorts, without the artist even having to be there.

Miranda July herself “using” one of the sculptures from her series called “Eleven Heavy Things.”  Put your finger into a pierced slab whose single hole is labeled “This is not the first hole my finger has been in, nor will it be the last,” and squeamishness soon sets in.
