After finally searching the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Monday, Turkish police reportedly found “certain evidence” that missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi had been killed inside the building, according to an official cited Tuesday by the Associated Press. The official did not provide further detail about what was found, but said it was obtained during the nine-hour search that ended Tuesday morning. The Associated Press also reported Tuesday that the Saudi consul is planning to leave the country, after Turkish officials announced plans to search his home for further evidence. Tuesday’s news comes after the Saudi government has repeatedly denied involvement in Khashoggi’s disappearance and suspected death, despite condemnation from Turkish and U.S. officials alike. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan added to that condemnation Tuesday when he claimed that the Saudis had painted over part of the consulate. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Saudi King Salman Monday, appearing in smiling photos and thanking the government for a “commitment to supporting a thorough, transparent, and timely investigation.”
