12 security team members of a health workers’ convoy were killed on Saturday and dozens more injured when Pakistani militants detonated a roadside bomb and then opened fire. The convoy carried members of a polio vaccination team (Pakistan remains one of the last three countries in the world where polio is endemic) through northwest Pakistan. An official said all casualties were members of the “levies” or Khasadar, both locally-recruited and government-backed militias. Though polio vaccination teams and government forces are often attacked, a UNICEF spokeswoman said it was unclear who the target was this time.
