The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., declined to sign an arrest warrant sent to them by local police for a Republican congressman who happens to be an ally of President Donald Trump, according to a new report.
Florida Rep. Cory Mills, a Trump supporter in his second term, is under investigation for an alleged assault against a 27-year-old woman in D.C.—though questions have arisen in recent days about the circumstances surrounding the authorities’ response.
Police reports obtained by NBC and Politico indicate an alleged incident involving the Republican at a luxury penthouse apartment on Wednesday afternoon. Mills has denied the allegations, but authorities are now under pressure to provide answers.
The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) disclosed to NBC 4 Washington Monday that a warrant for his arrest was sent to the U.S. Attorney’s Office on Friday. According to the NBC report, the warrant has not been signed and his case has been sent back to the MPD for further investigation, cops said. The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not comment on the report, claiming it does not comment on uncharged cases.
The decision raises questions about why the U.S. Attorney’s Office made the decision to refuse the case. Ed Martin, the Trump appointee who has been the interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia since Trump took office, has made a series of unusual statements in public support of the president and Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) chief Elon Musk.
On Monday, he even suggested in a statement that federal prosecutors serve as the president’s personal attorneys.
Martin has also publicly threatened to investigate high-profile critics of Musk and DOGE, supported the “Stop the Steal” movement that claimed fraud in the 2020 election, and dismissed about 30 federal prosecutors who worked on Jan. 6-related cases.
According to the NBC report, D.C. police said an internal investigation is taking place to determine why officers made no arrest, along with why the case was reclassified as a family disturbance instead of an assault.
“Once MPD leadership became aware of this matter there was an immediate review of our initial response to ensure all procedures were followed. MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is currently investigating this matter,” a statement said.
In an interview at the Capitol Monday, per Politico, Mills said, “Both myself and the other individual said that what they’re claiming took place never took place and that’s been reported multiple times. That’s why the prosecutor, [when] MPD tried to even push it forward, denied prosecution or any follow up.”
When probed on why MPD tried to issue an arrest warrant in the first place, Mills said: “That’s something for them.”

One report from the MDC obtained by NBC alleges that law enforcement were called to a Washington address on Wednesday after being alerted to an alleged assault. It added that the congressman allegedly used force against a woman who was not his wife, according to Politico. Two other reports obtained by NBC subsequently show fewer and fewer details about the incident.
In a statement to NBC News, Mills’ office said: “This week, law enforcement was asked to resolve a private matter at Congressman Mills’ residence. Congressman Mills vehemently denies any wrongdoing whatsoever, and is confident any investigation will clear this matter quickly.”
The woman who initially reached out to law enforcement about the alleged assault later told CNN in a statement that there was “no physical altercation” and that she had made the call in a state of being “severely jet-lagged and sleep deprived.”
While not speaking on the police reports, meanwhile, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser told NBC she is, “making sure that all of our members did what they’re supposed to do, according to MPD policy.”
Mills is a two-term House member representing a central Florida district. He has hinted that he might run for Senate in 2026.
In a statement to the Daily Beast the MPD said, “This is an active criminal investigation and there is no further information on the case to provide at this time.”
“Once MPD leadership became aware of this matter there was an immediate review of our initial response to ensure all procedures were followed,” the statement continued. “MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is currently investigating this matter.”
The Daily Beast has reached out to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for additional comment. Mills’ office could not immediately be reached.
