A federal appeals court will begin considering California’s ban on gay marriage, Proposition 8, on Monday—a process that, most agree, will wind up before the Supreme Court. Arguments will be televised, but they’re not expected to include new arguments or witnesses. After this court’s decision, it will be possible for an appeal directly to the Supreme Court, which, should it accept, would consider same-sex marriage for the first time.
