Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel plans to abolish the Independent Police Review Authority, a city agency tasked with investigating allegations of police misconduct. The news was released Friday in advance of an essay Emanuel wrote for publication in the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times. Founded in 2007, the IPRA has been the subject of recent criticism, particularly after the city released footage of a Chicago police officer shooting teenager Laquan McDonald 16 times.
Emanuel is calling for a new oversight body, writing “that it is clear that a totally new agency is required to rebuild trust in investigations of officer involved shootings and the most serious allegations of police misconduct.”
