Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said late Friday he intends to serve the remainder of his term, despite widespread calls for his resignation following a scandal involving a racist photo. Northam, a Democrat, confessed to appearing in a 1984 medical school yearbook photo featuring a person in blackface and a person in Ku Klux Klan robes (he didn’t say which he was). After saying he was sorry on video, Northam said he can’t undo the past “but I accept responsibility for my past actions and I am ready to do the hard work of regaining your trust. I have spent the past year as your governor fighting for a Virginia that works better for all people. I am committed to continuing that fight through the remainder of my term and living up to the expectations you set for me when you elected me to serve.”
