The Red Cross is attempting to negotiate a temporary ceasefire Monday so that the international aid organization can get medical care and supplies to Syrians, particularly in the beleaguered city of Homs. A spokesman for the Red Cross said, “We want to reach some of the hardest-hit areas,” and that talks were happening “right now.” According to the Syrian opposition, the city of Homs endured its 17th day of shelling by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad as diplomatic attempts at bringing an end to the conflict continued to break down. The Red Cross says it has been intermittently active in Homs, but a ceasefire is necessary “to provide humanitarian services.”
