American art historian Dr Arthur Wheelock, a scholar at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, believes a 16-year old Rembrandt is the central figure in Jan Lievens’ painting The Cardplayers, from the 1620s. The painting only recently came to public attention, after being sold by Sotheby’s, Amsterdam in 2007. It is currently on view in a Lievens exhibition at the Rembrandthuis in Amsterdam, following venues in Washington and Milwaukee. Rembrandt and Lievens studied together in Amsterdam, which has led Dr. Wheelock to consider that the confident young cardplayer, who is draped in a blue cloak, bears a striking resemblance to a self-portrait of Rembrandt, painted six years later.
