The Justice Department has opened an investigation into child sexual abuse in Pennsylvania’s Roman Catholic Church, according to an Associated Press report. Sources told the AP that federal prosecutors have “served subpoenas on dioceses across the state,” seeking to obtain a “trove of sensitive files and testimony from church leaders.” The Philadelphia, Erie, Harrisburg, Scranton, Pittsburgh and Allentown dioceses confirmed to The New York Times that they have received subpoenas. The DOJ investigation and subpoenas follow a grand-jury report that alleged hundreds of priests in the state abused over a thousand children. According to the AP, the state’s attorney general reportedly said no state charges would be filed “because of legal time limits.”
