State media reported that he was flown to a South African hospital, but sources told Reuters that Mutharika was dead when he was rushed to a hospital in Lilongwe. The 78-year-old was a former World Bank official who was blamed for the country’s recent economic collapse, and had been accused of trampling on human rights in recent years.
