Report: Melania Trump’s Parents Likely Used ‘Chain Migration’ for Green Cards

First Lady Melania Trump’s parents “likely relied” on the family reunification process—a policy President Trump dislikes and has derisively referred to as “chain migration”—to obtain permanent-resident status, The Washington Post reported Wednesday. Sources close to the family told the Post that both Viktor and Amalija Knavs are close to getting citizenship status—but their attorney denied to say how they both obtained their green cards. The Knavses, originally from Slovenia, are reportedly waiting to schedule their swearing-in ceremony. This comes as the Trump administration has looked to crack down on “chain migration” as one way to curb immigration to the United States. During his State of the Union address last month, Trump stated that his new plan would only allow “spouses and minor children” to be “sponsored for legal residency.” The Knavses have been living on-and-off with the Trumps in New York for years, and have been seen in Washington since the First Lady moved into the White House.
