President Donald Trump asked former White House Staff Secretary Rob Porter “several times” last year if he would be willing to take White House counsel Don McGahn’s position, according to The New York Times. Porter reportedly told the president that he didn’t feel “he was qualified for the role.” Times reporter Maggie Haberman also tweeted that “Ivanka Trump and Kushner and others” encouraged the president to offer the job to Porter. The staff secretary left the White House earlier this year amid accusations that he physically abused his two former wives. Trump tweeted on Wednesday that McGahn will leave his position in the fall, reportedly without consulting McGahn. According to the Times, McGahn had signaled months ago that he “planned to step down soon but had not settled on a date.” The newspaper also reported that McGahn had been a “frequent target” of White House senior advisers Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.
