President Trump has reportedly personally been lobbying Republican senators to turn on Attorney General Jeff Sessions and push for his firing in recent weeks. Sources cited by Politico late Wednesday said Trump has already made progress in inciting anger at Sessions among a handful of lawmakers, including Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-IA) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC). Trump brought up the possibility of firing Sessions to Graham last week and has been complaining about his attorney general to “any senator who will listen,” according to the report. While the president’s legal team had previously cautioned him against ousting Sessions during special counsel Robert Mueller’s obstruction-of-justice investigation, they too are said to be putting up less resistance. One source told Politico that Trump’s lawyers are starting to see firing Sessions “almost like an afterthought” in Mueller’s probe, since the obstruction of justice case has already largely been made.
